Maria’s Bag won The Rising Start Award

Guatemalan founder of an ethical handbag and accessory brand was awarded Fashion Group International’s Accessory Handbag Rising Star Award

NEW YORK (Jan. 29, 2020) Alida Boer, CEO and founder of MARIAS, an ethical brand that creates unique luxury handbags and accessories that integrate traditional techniques into their designs, was awarded the prestigious Rising Star Award in the category of Accessory Handbags during Fashion Group International’s annual Rising Star Awards held at Cipriani 42ndStreet on Jan. 28, 2020 in New York. The Rising Star Award celebrates Boer’s extraordinary accomplishments of emerging talent through creativity and vision.

“This is not for me, but for the 600 women who make magic with their hands and delicately work on each and every bag to keep our beautiful legacy and roots alive. In a world where fast fashion has taken over, they preserve more than just fashion and have transformed fashion into a vehicle to provide jobs, show culture, and make this world a better place,” said Alida Boer, founder and CEO of Marias, after accepting her award presented to her by Jonathan Adler. 

The product portfolio of Boer’s company currently includes a collection of handbag styles form clutches, bowlers and satchels to large-sized hand- bags, as well as accessories such as scarfs, wallets, charms and straps. The company has succeeded in elevating the outside notions of traditional techniques by showing the luxury and high-fashion couture aspect of artisanal craftsmanship and has grown from a team of four to a family of over 500 in less than 10 years. 

Fashion Group International’s annual Rising Star Awards recognize brands that have been in business between one to six years. The competition’s finalists are selected by FGI’s board of directors and committees and the winners are selected by FGI members via online voting. 

By reinventing the classics through the finest artisanal techniques and creating unique accessories that are more than a product, but also pieces of art, MARIAS is the first brand to elevate and showcase Mayan traditional textile, known as Huipil, as a means of creating a high-end fashion and has become an immediate success with products being sold in over 12 countries.
